I have asked this question so many times over the last couple years!
Here's my bullet points - these will need to be individual posts for clarity - but for time saving I will start with the outline!
Apparel manufacturing - it is horrific - Slavery, trafficking, sweatshops, factory labor camps, children ... ughhhh
Pollution - also so bad - synthetics, dyes, chemicals, factory farms, inconceivable volumes of waste (clothing is one of the largest category of landfill waste) ...ughhhh
Resources - terrible here too - destruction of natural resources, factory farms, transient/ undocumented / trafficked labor... ughhhh
Financials - apparel is weirdly inefficient economically and intersects most areas of human need, development, and social integration. (Check out Maslow's hierarchy and ask where clothing really fall into it.) High cost to families means parents deny themselves, children get denied access that affects them both physically and socially, cost of dressing with bodily changes or health changes makes it immensely difficult. High costs of dressing for job and work changes and for promotion and growth. High costs of appropriate grieving and special occasion wear that is unplanned... And seriously the costs of beautiful and high quality apparel is discriminatory for lower & most middle class - even upper middle class families cannot provide in the manner they would hope. (Chicago-land ministry was interesting in its revelation of this fact.)
Influence - apparel is singularly influential - psychology and neurology have identified clear impression-based behaviour that saturates human interactions on every level, and industry and social situations are often dependent on apparel for access.
Faith - the Gospel teaching on apparel is striking. Taken with the OT, it is evident that the Lord enjoys, provides & demands provision from His people, and interestingly, the Lord expects honor and beauty from and gives honor and beauty - all through apparel.
Supply - we have plenty and there is always MORE. Say it with me folks! ABUNDANCE. BLESSINGS upon blessings. It's from the Lord! Thank you, Abba! So when that beautiful item you used to love to wear doesn't fit right or at all anymore, pass it on and receive its replacement. Or do it in the other order, find the replacement and then give the unfitting and extra away!
Provision - we are blessed to be able to provide for some of your needs as well as our own. We desire to increasingly offer provision for those in need. We are working on pathways to do this more efficiently. Our first step is to allow people to pay what they can for self-checkout shopping. It is posted at the self-checkout area. (Everyone knows I gave discounts / freebies willy nilly.) We do also have buyers who want to help provide for the store and for the community. So if you need, please contact us, so we can find a way to help!
